Gmail: I get other people’s email

It turns out, I’m not the only Gary Richardson using the internet. I get other people’s email. I seem to get one of these every few weeks or so. I’ve had my current gmail address since invites were going for $1,000+ on Ebay. I didn’t pay for mine; I got lucky and had a friend who got one early on.

So far:

  •  There’s a Gary in the UK — I get his concert tickets from Ticketmaster.
  • There’s another Gary in Boise, Idaho. His friend tested his iPhone by sending me an email. This Gary also got emails about Roadways to Bikeways for awhile.
  • There’s another Gary in the US that gets various press release type info sent to him. It’s possibly the same Gary in Boise.

Whenever I can, I let the sender know. Unfortunately, I don’t have the real contact info for these people, so I can’t forward tickets.

I’m pretty sure it’s people typing the email address wrong. Google says this has to do with the dots in email addresses. I haven’t been able to get in touch with “name doppelgangers” to find out what their real addresses are, so I’m going to assume that’s the case for now.
