Two Big AWS Announcements Today

It looks like Amazon is responding to AppEngine with fire and motion. There were two more announcements this morning that I think are big:

  • Premium Support for the Web Services. I’m not currently in the market for support (we’re not live at this point and I haven’t run into any problems the forums or google couldn’t solve), but I’m sure other users will comment on the quality and effectiveness of the service. Early adopters were taking big risks moving their apps to AWS. Premium Support should at least make people more comfortable.
  • A service health dashboard. A few other cloud providers offer these and a lot of people have been asking for one. To me, this is a commitment from Amazon to uptime that’s more important than SLA’s and Premium support. They’re not afraid to show their track record to the public.

Static IP’s, better EC2 persistent storage and a health dashboard were on my wish list. I wonder what else they will add? Maybe index pages for S3 buckets? Maybe they should acquire and integrate Rightscale?
