My Blackberry Application Error 523 Fix

I’m going to be at Linuxfest Northwest today. I’m currently sitting in a Starbucks as I’m about two hours early. I expected much longer lineups at the border. Sitting at Starbucks is definitely preferable to sitting at the border or being late :)

I’ve been having ongoing issues with my Blackberry Curve when roaming in the US. It dies as soon as I cross the border with “Application Error 523 Reset.” I’m on my 3rd Blackberry Curve. This issue has persisted through two of them. My last replacement was due to the sim card coming loose. When I was working with the tech support rep at Rogers he suggested that an application I had installed may be causing the crash.

This morning, before I left, I uninstalled all my non-blackberry apps. I’m not using them anyway since I have data access turned off on my phone. After I crossed the border, I was on the I5 and it was still working! I went to scan my text messages and the whole thing crashed. I don’t think it had switched carriers yet.

Since I got here earlier than expected, I figured I’d do some googling and try working through the problem. I found a couple references in forum posts to themes causing the crash. I’ve been using the iLike OSX Theme for ages. So I popped the sim card out, switched the theme and rebooted. Lo and behold, my phone works in the US again!
