Cloudstatus.com
This morning, Hyperic’s CEO, Javier Soltero, did a presentation on their new website called http://cloudstatus.com. They do performance and availability monitoring of Amazon Web Services. It’s a little more in-depth than the existing AWS Status page. The site actually tracks metrics instead of outages, so you can see the performance of the different services over time. I wonder if Amazon will accept this for claims against the S3 SLA?
Hyperic plans on adding other cloud services later this year. I’m guessing this will include at least Mosso (since they’re already using Hyperic).
I’ve been lucky enough two work in two companies that immediately saw the value of outsourcing their hardware to the cloud. From the conversations going on today, I’ve had an unusual experience. A lot of companies seem to be reluctant to move into the cloud. In the long run, this will be a great resource for those who need to convince their bosses that cloud services are ready.
I’m not too eager to jump in, although I see some places where it could be useful to the company.
I haven’t gotten a handle yet on the best way to get my feet wet. Do they have a free development lab, or anything, where you can try out the services they offer? I’m also not concrete on the billing methods. It made it seem like they charged for the amount of time the machine would be running, but with an infrastructure requiring a certain number of 9’s, that seems cost prohibitive.
Are there any good sources of more information of a “here’s how it works in babysteps”?

I think you’re at the conference, no? I’d look for Jeff Barr or hit the Amazon booth — he’d be able to help you out. The hardest part is changing your mindset to match the non-persistant data. It’s really for the best though because once you make the switch, it frees you to scale.
