The main purpose I think is to prevent accidentally racking up a huge bill if you are traveling (data roaming is not cheap). Also, you can call Rogers and tell them to disable data to your phone. That's what I do with my Blackberry Curve. It seems like the iphone is pretty tied to being connected all the time. I don't have one to experiment with, but I hope you don't end up shooting yourself in the wallet.
